McDonalds is rewarding good grades with free greasy food. Read about it here. They have picked up the $1600 printing costs for the report card jackets for the school year in Seminole County, FL. The 27,000 elementary school students in the county will be eligible for a free happy meal if they present their report card with good grades, few absences or good marks in citizenship.
I won't criticize McDonalds for this move. I think its a creative and cost effective way to reach kids and their parents, but I will say shame on the School Board of Seminole County!
With the trouble with obesity in children today, I hardly think its appropriate for schools to be partnering with this fast food giant that certainly helps contribute to the problem. The school system should be encouraging healthy eating habits; they should be offering balanced meals in the cafeteria and healthy snacking options in the vending machines, and certainly should not be rewarding children with a burger and fries. If they can't come up with the $1600 in printing costs for the report card jackets, maybe they could just do without. It seems like a better alternative than selling out kids' health.
