I admit to being one of the Johnny-come-lately's to "The CBS Evening News" and only for the fact that I was interested in seeing how Katie Couric fared as the new anchor woman. Well, I've watched it for a week and I'm pretty tempted to call out Katie for a throw-down.
I've never been a fan of Couric's brand of bubble-gum-cheerleader-of-damned-soccer-moms persona, but I do respect it. I respect that she'll wear her pearly pink suits while conducting a serious interview. I respect that she's a grown woman who is not afraid to giggle on national television. I respect that she has maintained that toothy-lip-glossed-gosh-darnedness in the face of an entertainment industry that is notoriously ageist against women.
But what I don't respect is that she is embracing some bizarre idea that she is somehow now required to speak in disengaging monotones and should dress like Hester Prinn. I keep expecting to see the Mayflower sail by in the background every evening. It's like that line in the movie "Working Girl" where Harrison Ford's character comments that Melanie Grifith "dresses like a woman and not how a woman thinks a man would dress if he were a woman".
I would really prefer Katie to be as she is and not how she thinks America thinks she should now be. Bring back the annoying and preternaturally cuteness that bothers me so, because then, at least she is being who she really is, the woman that for better worse, was sought out to be new face of "The CBS Evening News."
